Two avid mountain bikers, Devon Carl Naude and Roy Hannington from Table Mountain Bikers club in Cape Town recently completed the grueling Cape Pioneer Trek Race from 16 – 22 October to raise funds for the Gondwana Conservation Foundation (GCF). We are proud to report that the team did the cause proud and placed in the top 20 in their category for the race.
The goal was to raise R1,000 per Km for the 496km race or R496,000 for the GCF’s Rainbow Rhino Initiative. This initiative has recently established a new counter poaching training camp facility and funds counter poaching training courses for new soldiers focusing on tracking, crime scene investigation and drone surveillance.
We are exceptionally happy and grateful to report that the team was able to raise R544 000 in donations with an incredible final donation of R350,000 from a charitable trust in the United States! The funds raised will go to securing vital training equipment needed including night vision glasses, safety gear, and lecturing equipment as well as subsidizing multiple training courses over the next 12 months. The Gondwana Conservation Foundation is thrilled to receive this funding and continue its efforts to protect Rhino in Africa.
We would like to thank all those who made donations and the many messages of encouragement received over the 7–day period. Thank you to the Breakfast show @ KFM for helping us publicize the important cause!
