After many months of preparation our first pioneers have finally set foot on the trail traversing Gondwana’s 11 000 hectare, Big Five Fynbos landscape! The first wilderness trail walkers enjoyed incredible sightings on foot including honey badger, hippo, elephant, giraffe, eland and various antelope. Amazingly, Gondwana’s big male lion and head of the pride has roared all 3 wilderness trail groups awake at Camp 1 on their first night before setting off on the trail. Quite the experience!
The three-day walking safari experience takes guests to three remote seasonal tented camps with two full days of hiking. Our Expert trail guides intimately expose participants (a maximum of 8) to Gondwana’s unique biodiversity and eco systems while experiencing the Big Five and multiple species of antelope on foot. The trail is approximately 20 kilometres long traversed over 2 days and the Pioneer Trail itinerary also includes a game drive on the last afternoon and a swim in a waterhole for those who choose to take a dip.
Each exclusive camp is comprised of only four guest canvas tents with en-suite bathrooms including claw foot bathtubs and outdoor showers. The main facilities include a lounge tent, dining tent, and outdoor relaxation areas including a campfire boma area. The camps have been exquisitely and luxuriously appointed. Each camp has their own distinct décor style inspired by different African countries including Kenya, Mozambique and Morocco. The food takes it cue from these African locals as well, treating guests to exciting flavors and textures beyond the traditional safari fare. Hikers are replenished at the end of the day with fun afternoon treats with cold beverages on tap before they freshen up and indulge in a homemade African inspired dinner in the beautiful dining tent with crockery and glassware sourced from the country that has inspired the camp. Gondwana’s Pioneer Trail is the ultimate slack packing adventure where your belongings are moved daily between the three mobile camps allowing you to experience the dramatic Fynbos landscape with only a light day pack. You literally need to “just bring your boots” and the Pioneer Trail team will do the rest.
